This Saturday, the Southgate House Revival (111 E. Sixth St., Newport, southgatehouse.com) will be home to an ’80s Cincinnati music scene reunion as some of the biggest Alt acts from the era team up to remember Paul Stewart. The enigmatic singer for influential local Alternative music bands Red Math and Junta died in February from a heart ailment. He was 56.
Saturday’s celebration in memory of Stewart will feature performances by several of his musical peers, many of whom have not performed together in years, including Perfect Jewish Couple, Zero Gravity/Drumbones, The Uninvited Guests and Get Christy Love.
There will also be tributes to Stewart’s music by some of his closest musical companions. Along with a performance by Stewart’s Junta bandmates, an all-star band called The Algorithms will feature Red Math’s Paul Brooke and Mike Davis performing their old group’s songs like “Expectations” and “Wrought in Promise" (the band also includes former members of Sleep Theatre, Roundhead and The Nervous Pioneers).
Other bands playing include The Warsaw Falcons, Mary Tyler Mustang, The Tigerlilies and The Libertines (the original Libertines from Cincinnati, not the later British band).
Music begins Saturday at 8 p.m. Admission is $13 in advance or $15 at the door. Ticket proceeds will be donated to Stewart’s family to help them with expenses. There will be some new “merch” for sale to help the family as well, including T-shirts, buttons and remastered CDs featuring Red Math’s long-out-of-print and hard-to-find music. There will also be raffles where fans can win vintage Red Math vinyl and more.
