Have some time on Saturday afternoon for a one-time theatrical experience? Stop by Know Theatre at 3 p.m. for a reading of Noah Haidle's Mr. Marmalade.
Know planned to mount a full production of this show during its current season, but with the economy in the crapper, they had to make some adjustments and Haidle's script was set aside. Nevertheless, Know wanted to offer it in some form for audiences that are currently enjoying another play by the 30-year-old Haidle, Vigils (getting a full production through April 25).—-
Mr. Marmalade is described as a "zany comedy about emotionally disturbed children." Lucy, age 4, wants to have tea with her imaginary friend, Mr. Marmalade, but he's too busy. We also meet Larry, age 5 and the youngest suicide attempt in the history of New Jersey; a babysitter; a talking cactus; and Mr. Marmalade's personal assistant, a much put-upon man who can sing like an angel.
Know says the play is a "sly, darkly comic look at the power of imagination."
The reading will take 90 minutes; come at 2:15 p.m. for a "meet-and-greet" with the cast and director Jason Bruffy. It's a shame that this script, by a playwright some think might be the next Christopher Durang, a writer known for his surreal comedy/dramas, isn't getting a full production. But a reading by Know's company of actors is a good substitute, not to mention a fine opportunity to compare this work to Vigils, another off-kilter look at a subject (death and grief) that might not leap to mind as funny, but which has audiences laughing out loud.
