UPDATE: The Taft has canceled its House Party event and released a statement saying, "The safety and well-being of our staff, volunteers, and visitors are always our highest priorities. We are mindful of concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and are committed to being responsive, following the recommendations of US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Ohio Department of Health. Keeping the safety of all in mind, the Taft Museum of Art will remain open with precautionary measures including canceling and postponing larger programs."
This March, the Taft Museum of Art is celebrating Women's History Month, the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment and ArtsWave's Power of Her initiative.
The museum will first host a Power of Her Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on March 7, during which guests will be introduced to the intricate quilts crafted by Cynthia Lockhart for the current exhibition, Journey to Freedom: Art Quilts by Cynthia Lockhart. The show includes a special quilt inspired by the Duncanson Murals within the Taft’s two-century-old home. After exploring the exhibit, art lovers will be able to make their own creation inspired by Journey to Freedom.
The Power of Her Day also includes music and dance from the Cultural Centre of India, Full Moon Ranch and Cincinnati Baila.
And the celebration of women doesn’t end there, as the Taft's House Party series kicks back up on Thursday, March 12.
From 5-8 p.m., guests can take a guided tour of the Taft’s collection of women’s portraits, learning about each, including the portrait of museum co-founder Annie Sinton Taft and her influence on the local arts and organizations like ArtsWave and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. There will be a craft station where attendees can make their own work of art to submit to the American Institute of Graphic Design-Cincinnati for a chance to be featured in AIGA’s Words of Wisdom gallery show in March. Proceeds from that event will go to Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio and Women of Cincy. The evening includes snacks, a DJ and a special cocktail from Molly Wellmann available at a cash bar.
Tickets to both the Power of Her Day and the Taft House Party are free. Parking is free in the Taft Museum garage on a first come, first-served basis. The Taft Museum of Art is located at 316 Pike St., Downtown, taftmuseum.org.
