Leggy has been a staple of the Cincinnati music scene — and one of its best international exports — since emerging five years ago with its debut EP, Cavity Castle, which helped the group earn a New Artist of the Year nomination at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Since then, the trio has released a handful of other EPs and singles, several of which were compiled for a self-titled album that was distributed by U.K. label Damnably Records and led to overseas touring.
This Friday (March 8), Leggy is releasing its very first full-length album to feature new and unreleased material titled Let Me Know Your Moon. The album — coming out through the new Sheer Luck Records — gets the hometown-release-party treatment this Friday at MOTR Pub. Let Me Know Your Moon is an enchanting and engaging collection of Leggy’s intimate, emotive, slanted and noisy Indie Pop songs. Serpentine, often ethereal melodies slink through Veronique Allaer’s crunchy, sometimes dissonant guitars and the impressively dynamic and creative rhythms of bassist Kerstin Bladh and Chris Campbell (who’ve developed a noticeably tight and telepathic chemistry), as the songs move between an intoxicated punchiness and more woozily-paced soundscapes to create a thoroughly enjoyable, occasionally dizzying experience.
Let Me Know Your Moon also contains some of Leggy's finer lyrical moments to date. The poetic musings often focus on interpersonal relationships, searching for the hows and whys with an acute self-awareness. "Eden" precisely encapsulates the mix of tentativeness and longing that comes with a hardcore crush: "I’d like to hop on your train of thought/I think I’m ready to try my lot/I know your birthstone, your horoscope/I think you’re perfect/And when I like your status once a week/I skinny dip in your stream/Of consciousness/Consciously."
"Taffy" also looks inward, but examines conflicted feelings from within a relationship that feels both right and wrong, beginning with the lines, "Why do I still pout?/I pray to be content with all these goodly things I've found/You fit like a glove but still I push you away/Why do I do that my love?"
Let Me Know Your Moon finds Leggy in peak form, a perfect calling card that perfectly showcases everything the band is great at.
