An aspiring violinist leaves Appalachia for New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a classical musician. She lands a gig in a professional ensemble — but there’s a catch: The group doesn’t actually perform; rather “the composer” blasts music from a CD, which sounds a lot like the Titanic soundtrack.

In a gist, that’s the basis of Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman’s memoir, Sounds Like Titanic.

A local author and English professor at Northern Kentucky University, the memoir marks her full-length debut, having been previously published in The New York Times Magazine, Oprah Magazine and McSweeney’s. Ultimately a coming-of-age story, Hindman finds herself disillusioned and at odds with the false reality that surrounds her.
