The Pub was recognized as having the best fish and chips in America by representatives of Greene King, the UK's largest pub retailer and brewery, and Old Speckled Hen brewery — aka people from England who know their fish and chips.
After evaluating the tavern classic at more than 100 spots across the country, the Pub location in Pembroke, Fla. won based on qualifications including batter consistency, fish freshness, perfect chip texture and how well the fish and chips complemented a pint of Old Speckled Hen.
Now, Pub locations across the states are celebrating with Best Fish & Chips Parties featuring half-price fish and chips, discounted Old Speckled Hen, live music, prize giveaways and a chance to win fish and chips for a year. The Pub Crestview Hills and The Pub Rookwood are getting in on the action with celebrations at both locations 6-9 p.m. Wednesday (April 11).
The competition kicked off in November last year with public voting, followed by second round of voting via a weeklong taste test with Greene King judges from Bury St. Edmonds, England. Out of a possible 110 points, The Pub Pembroke got 105.
"We were overwhelmed by the brilliant effort put forth by the Pub Pembroke which was only overshadowed by their outstanding Fish & Chips and perfect pint of Old Speckled Hen," said Gemma Woolnough, global brand manager of Old Speckled Hen, in a press release. "We are humbled by their hospitality and the consistency with which they and their staff carry the authentic British tradition forward each and every day."
"We are just thrilled to receive this honor," said The Pub Group owner Nick Sanders in the same release. "Our team works diligently every day to bring an authentic British pub experience, complete with the ‘perfect fish and chips’ and a ‘perfect pint’ to each and every guest. An award like this means we must be doing something right."
