Two local animal welfare groups are joining forces to commemorate International Homeless Animals Day on Aug. 21.
The United Coalition for Animals and Cincinnati Pet Food Pantry will hold an event at Twin Lakes in Eden Park. It will include music, a blessing of the animals and a candlelight vigil at dusk.—-
The event, scheduled from 7-10 p.m., is free but there will be refreshments, flameless candles and glow-sticks available for purchase.
Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome at the event, but they must have current license and rabies tags displayed on their collars.
All local animal rescue and animal welfare organizations are encouraged to attend so they can raise awareness about their group's efforts at helping homeless animals.
“This is a very special opportunity for those of us involved with animal welfare in Cincinnati to come together, united and without competition, to shed light on our common mission and on what each of us does to help the many homeless animals on our streets and in our shelters,” said Shannon DeBra, president of the Pet Food Pantry, in a prepared statement.

Begun in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights, International Homeless Animals Day is designed an an educational forum to inform the public about pet overpopulation and the problems facing animal shelters worldwide.
