Pig Out on Veggie Pigs-in-a-Blanket

Here's the dish on hogs: they rank among the smartest in the animal kingdom and despite the phrase "pigging out," they actually savor their food. On March 1, National Pig Day, Americans across the Midwest don snouts, dress in pink and "eat like pigs" to celebrate their intelligence and contributions to mankind.—-

While most of America designates only one day to the hog, those of us in Cincinnati can celebrate the services of swine year-round (this is Porkopolis, after all). ArtWorks' Big Pig Gig returns this year, bringing a decorated pig to every corner of the city, and hardly a restaurant exists that would not satisfy anyone’s pork-lust with mouthwatering goetta, rib and sausage recipes unique to Cincinnati.

But, if you want to switch it up every once in a while and eat a meat-free meal, look no further than your favorite recipe book - just swap out the meat. Vegetarian substitutions are available at nearly ever grocery store, and many brands offer coupons on their websites. You can find veggie-based ground "beef," "chicken," "bacon," burgers and dogs to convert traditional recipes to animal-friendly meals in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Don’t be fooled by rumors of bland tastes and laborious cooking when you think about vegetarian dining, either: Vegetarian Pigs in a Blanket are quick, effortless and addicting - perfect for an after-school/work snack or party appetizer. Think about giving the porkers a little love and try some swine-free alternatives.
