The nonprofit Building Value organization (which recycles and resells building materials) hosts its first ReUse-apalooza tonight to celebrate the benefits of reuse through art. The fun will include live music from Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, an opportunity to participate in a permanent installation of a community sculpture by Northside's Paul Lashua, step performance by the Allegacy Girls Step Team of W.E.B DuBois Academy, simultaneous chess exhibition by Douglas Dysar, an opera singer, a juggler and much more.—-
"In 2009 more than 2,000 tons of building materials was diverted from local landfills and put to reuse in Cincinnati home and remodeling projects through Building Value," says a press release for the event. "The City of Wyoming, the Village of Greenhills and the City of Cincinnati have all taken positive steps for the sustainability of the community by committing to deconstruct and salvage with Building Value certain homes and businesses previously destined for the landfill. 2010 is a new year, and ReUse-apalooza brings the community together to celebrate an ongoing commitment to sustaining our local resources.
"In addition to salvaging material from local construction and remodeling projects and making it available for reuse, Building Value trains people with disadvantages and disabilities for the workforce. Through deconstruction and retail positions, people who have been chronically unemployed have received valuable training opportunities and have begun on the path toward permanent employment."
Tonight's event is 7-10:30 p.m. at Building Value's still-new retail facility at 4040 Spring Grove Ave., Northside. Tickets are $25 per person or $35 per couple at the door and include a beverage ticket and hors d’oeuvres. All proceeds benefit Building Value.
