The best theater is honest and real, and that's what True Theatre is setting out to offer via four evenings of "true stories told by real people" beginning tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Know Theatre and continuing into next summer. —-One theater acquaintance told me this program is inspired by the Moth Theatre in New York City (which offers podcasts of people telling true stories without notes or a script). But this new venture in Cincinnati is about sharing stories and building community under the banner of Know's "Jackson Street Market," a venture to provide a friendly venue for "artistic entrepreneurs," people like Jeff Groh and Dave Levy, True's creators and organizers.
The first of four evenings for the current theater season is tonight: True Fear (hey, it's Halloween next weekend), featuring stories from five people about how fear has shaped their lives — like living with a schizophrenic father, facing a few months left to live, surviving a double lung transplant and maybe dealing with stage fright. Subsequent evenings/themes take place in January (beginnings), April (foolishness) and July (independence). Tickets are $15 (or get the whole series for $48). Buy tickets here.
