A local bakery known for its over-the-top donuts will be opening a brick-and-mortar location in Norwood by the end of 2020.
Starlight Doughnut Lab began sellings its delectable treats to the public in January 2019. Owner Ben Greiwe first made donuts for Nine Giant's New Year's Eve party and, after positive feedback, he began selling them weekly at the brewery.
Over the past year, Greiwe began offering his donuts at Pleasant Ridge's Apricot Coffee House on Fridays, as well as on Saturdays at the brewery. Starlight has also participated in several events throughout the city, including O.F.F Market and CityBeat's Sugar Rush. But the bakery has big plans to expand in 2020 — in addition to the new Norwood store, the coffee shop and the brewery, Greiwe is hoping to sell his goods at five more businesses around town.
Starlight Doughnut Lab's treats are made a little differently than your average donut. They use mashed potatoes in their dough which "boosts moisture, sweetness, flavor, and adds a crispy outside layer thanks to the potato's natural sugars caramelizing in the fryer," says Greiwe in an email interview.
The shop will be located at 4603 Carter Ave. in Norwood. There will be a counter displaying six classic flavors and six monthly flavors. They also plan to offer a weekly vegan- and gluten-free-friendly offering. Those donuts will be made with vegan and gluten-free ingredients but will be fried and crafted on the same surfaces. Visitors will be able to order donuts online in advance and pick them up at the store.
Donuts range in price from $2.50-$4 a piece and they offer discounts on orders of a dozen. Starlight typically focuses on cake donuts, but with the new shop they plan to roll out some yeast donuts with fillings like Boston cream, cheesecake and jelly. They are also planning to explore savory donut offerings as well as a possible donut breakfast sandwiches.
