This week we've mined our archives to bring out one of my favorite recordings: the Radical Media discussion from Cincinnati's 2003 Independent Media Expo. The Expo was a media educational and networking event that I helped organize in 2003. It was hosted by Media Bridges. This panel discussion included Dr. Ellen Bierhorst, Jimmy Heath and Josh Breitbart.
Josh Breitbart served on the editorial board of Clamor Magazine, a national independent news and culture publication that had a print run from 1999 until 2006. He also worked with the New York City Independent Media Center.
Jimmy Heath was Editor of Cincinnati's Streetvibes newspaper from 2002 until his death in 2007. One of many local homeless persons whose life was wrecked by drug and alcohol abuse, Heath bottomed out in the mid-90s. Working to found Streetvibes and becoming a photographer was part of his recovery. He turned his life around before his death at age 53 and became success story of recovery, sobriety and activism.
Ellen Bierhorst was one of the founding members of the Independent Eye, which was a Cincinnati alternative newspaper that was published from 1968 until the early 70s. The Independent Eye is the direct ancestor of publications like CityBeat.
