At 7 p.m. tonight (Friday, June 29), artist/cartoonist Carol Tyler will be at Northside's Shake It Records to launch the signing of her new graphic memoir, Fab4 Mania! An illustrated facsimile of the diary she kept in1965, when she was 13. It recalls the influence the British band had on a teenage girl's life.

Her devotion to the group led to her seeing them perform in Chicago on August 20 of that year, an experience she clearly has never forgotten. The Chicago Tribune in an early review called Fab4 Mania! "a remarkable act of cultural reporting."

At tonight's event at Shake It, Tyler will read from and sign her book. There will also be live music — some Beatles and related songs done in tribute.

Fab4Mania! is published by Fantagraphics, a company known for publishing the work of cartoonists. Tyler, who counts Robert Crumb among her fans, previously was the subject of CityBeat cover story when her book, Soldier’s Heart: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father: A Daughter’s Memoir, was reissued in 2015. It was accompanied by a museum exhibit.

Shake It is at 4156 Hamilton Ave. in Northside. More information here.
