Painter, muralist, arts educator and advocate Joyce Phillips Young will discuss her current exhibition of intricate, colorful and abstracted figurative paintings at the Weston Art Gallery, Spirit Moves, with gallery-goers Thursday. The retired Cincinnati Public Schools teacher was raised in the progressive college town of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and her early exposure to models of artistic endeavors helped shape her interest in the arts. A figurative painter who is inspired by spiritual pursuits, Phillips Young says, “Painting and the creative process are for me a metaphor for life.” She looks to share different ways of seeing with her viewers.

7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22. Free; refreshments provided but seating is limited. Weston Art Gallery, 650 Walnut St., Downtown, cincinnatiarts.org/weston-art-gallery.
