Based on the trailers, it appears that this action-comedy — about a “debonair” rogue art dealer named Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) seeking to recover a stolen painting with an embedded code that leads to undiscovered Nazi treasures — will trip, stumble and pratfall heavily on its butt thanks to a plethora of broad hijinks prettied up by its gorgeous cast (Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Paul Bettany). But what about giving audiences a better mix for some real entertainment? Blame director David Koepp who, as the writer of Panic Room and Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man as well as being the man at the helm of Stir of Echoes and Premium Rush, is much better known for his execution of action over laughs.
