It is always a fun endeavor to go to a smaller venue and see a band on the rise, to take in a group that has the potential for bigger and better things. That is the scenario for this week’s concert by Ivan & Alyosha at the Mayday in Northside.
The band hails from Seattle and, yes, with its bright and sunny songs, there are unavoidable comparisons to Mumford & Sons, especially in this age when everything Mumford has blown up. But Ivan & Alyosha does its own thing while still being a part of this cool trend of bringing melody back to Folk Pop music.
What first caught the eye of music lovers was Ivan & Alyosha’s song “Fathers Be Kind,” which showcased the band’s vocal chops and arrangements. When one uses adjectives like “melodic” and “Pop” to describe this group, it suggests the Pop music of the ’60s (instead of what is going on right now in the vapid mainstream).
Named after a couple of people found in Dostoevsky’s great book The Brothers Karamazov, Ivan & Alyosha is touring behind two previous EPs and its first-ever full length album, All The Times We Had. So now is a good time to see them in a more intimate setting.
