A cappella group Pentatonix had harmony at first sight.

The group began when three friends from Texas spontaneously teamed up for a competition to meet the cast of Glee. Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying didn’t win that competition, though. Further down the road, while Mitch was still a senior in high school and Kirstie and Scott were away at separate colleges, someone told them about a little show called The Sing Off, with Nick Lachey and Ben Folds.

Just one problem: They needed five members. However, with a little luck and a bit of Googling, they had their team filled out.

Avi Kaplan was a mutual friend and Kevin Olusola had made a name for himself with viral videos of his simultaneous beat-boxing and cello-playing skills. The five vocal artists didn’t all come together in one space until the day of the auditions. Nevertheless, they hit it off and harmonized perfectly.

Their lack of band practice didn’t hold them back — Pentatonix won The Sing Off

Pentatonix performs Saturday, April 27 at Bogart's in Corryville. Buy tickets, check out performance times and get venue details here
