I mean, goetta is sausage. That’s pretty much it. They put oats in there, but bottom line: It’s sausage. So it’s weird that 100,000 people come to this festival, right? And it’s weird that people from all 50 states and over 40 countries are expected to attend, right? And that the festival is “Bigger than Las Vegas New Year’s Eve” for “goetta devotees,” right? No! It’s not weird!
Oat sausage is probably one of the happiest odd couples of all time, like sweet and sour. Meat and oats have the best of all worlds: The oats cancel out the cholesterol from the meat; the oats can turn crispy quickly while the meat is good and raw; and the oats weren’t someone’s child (even thought the meat came from something with a face). Goetta is perfect, with something for literally everyone (excluding Hindus, vegetarians and children, who won’t try it because don’t like the word “goetta,” but would probably love it if they did.). Free Admission and entertainment (music and games) are free and all food is under $6. Goetta grip 5-11 p.m. Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and/or noon-9 p.m. Sunday at Newport on the Levee.
