Religion in Politics
Two speakers will discuss "The Role of Religion in Politics: Views from the Right and Left" in a program at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Schiff Family Conference Center at the Cintas Center at Xavier University. The speakers are Michelle Goldberg, a contributing writer for [email protected]. Donations also needed for advertising. The committee plans workshops, a march, a fast and other events throughout the week to call for an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Teen Legal Clinics
The first Teen Legal Clinic is set to open in Cincinnati. The clinic will offer legal assistance to teens with unmet civil or educational needs that increase their risk of dropping out of school. The clinic will be staffed by an attorney from the Children's Law Center, the sponsor of the clinic. The Greater Cincinnati Foundation provided funding. The clinic has 2 locations and times: 2-5 p.m. Wednesdays at Visions Community Services, 425 Ezzard Charles Drive, Wednesdays and 2-5 p.m. Thursday at Victory Neighborhood Services Agency, Inc. 736 McMillan St.
Walk for AIDS Patients
AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati (AVOC) will hold the 2006 Red Ribbon Walk for AIDS on Sept. 16, 2006 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Schott Amphitheatre at Sawyer Point. Registration begins at 8:00am. Registration is available online at www.avoc.org. The Red Ribbon Walk is an annual pledge walk to benefit AVOC, the leading area comprehensive HIV/AIDS service organization and resource center for people affected by HIV and AIDS.
Fighting for America's Soul
Religious extremists are fighting to control every aspect of American life. "Pluralism vs. Puritanism: Fighting for America's Soul" will examine the dangers and discuss ways to counteract the trend. The program features Rabbi James Rudin, author of The Baptizing of America: The Religious Right's Plan for the Rest of Us. Other speakers include Sister Alice Gerdeman, coordinator of the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center and the Rev. Robert L. Rademaker, rector of Ascension and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Wyoming. The program is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Wise Center, 8329 Ridge Road. Admission is free. Famed Tree-Sitter Visits
Julia Butterfly Hill, the author of The Legacy of Luna: The Story of a Tree, a Woman, and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods, speaks Sept. 18 at Northern Kentucky University. The program is at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 in the University Center in the Otto Budig Theater. Admission is free.
The Best of S.O.S. Art
A retrospective of S.O.S. Art, an annual art show and event of sociopolitical expression for peace and justice since 2003, is on exhibit at the University Galleries, 628 Sycamore St. The show includes 2D and 3D artworks on peace and justice by 50 Greater Cincinnati artists. "S.O.S. Art Retrospective: Selections, 2003-2005" runs through Sept. 8. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m.-4p.m. Saturdays.
Turn Around Ohio
