Talk about your mash-ups — that’s pretty much what you’ll find in Stephen Sondheim’s fairytale musical that interweaves the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood with a baker and his wife hoping to have a baby and a witch who’s throwing up roadblocks at every turn. Of course there’s a wolf, a few charming princes and a giant to complicate matters. And that’s Act I. In Act II we learn what comes after “happily ever after.” This production marks the 20th anniversary of another production of Into the Woods at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music when arts patron Patricia Corbett created the first “chair of musical theater” at any university anywhere. Aubrey Berg has sat on it for two decades, sustaining CCM’s musical theater program as one of the best in the U.S. This production will show you why. Thursday through Sunday.
