Just when you thought it was safe to cut down on dining out, summer brings even more opportunities to eat and drink new things in new places. At least you can do some of it in the name of charity.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s Charity Wines debuted on Father's Day.



Just when you thought it was safe to cut down on dining out, summer brings even more opportunities to eat and drink new things in new places. At least you can do some of it in the name of charity. On July 9, Kona Bistro in Oakley will hold a Community Night benefit for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that encourages preteen girls to develop self-esteem through running. The general public is invited to dine from 6-10 p.m. and proceeds will be collected through bar tips.

On Father's Day, Ken Griffey Jr. announced his new Charity Wines — 600 Home Run Club Vintage and Junior Cabernet. Proceeds will go to the Ken Griffey Jr. Family Foundation, which supports several causes, including children's hospitals across the U.S. These limited selections won't go on sale at local retailers until May 2009.

New places to eat and drink: Modern Relish Tapas, described as an oasis of new age tapas, just opened its doors in Mason with James Kankowski (formerly of Losantiville Country Club) as Executive Chef.

The Summit Restaurant at The Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State now serves dinner to the public. Gourmet dishes are prepared fresh daily under the direction of Executive Chef Matthew Winterrowd, formerly the chef de cuisine of Daveed's.

In August, Logan's is coming to Colerain Twp.
