The SOS art show, its name echoing Morse Code's distress signal, reminds us each year that peace and justice are always at risk. SOS Art 2011 opens a 10-day run from 6 p.m.-midnight Friday at the Art Academy of Cincinnati (1212 Jackson St., Over-the-Rhine) with a focus that evening on visual art, a potluck reception and music by The Last Boppers. A raft of activities continues 7-10 p.m. Saturday with poetry readings, spoken word, dance performances and short movies. From 3-5 p.m. Sunday, a panel discussion will consider how to use art for peace and justice.
The extensive, multi-discipline program continues from 7-10 p.m. June 4, with poetry readings, songs for peace and justice and a dance performance. On June 5, events begin at 3 p.m. with a documentary, Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Price, followed by artists discussing the relationship of their work to peace and justice and a closing potluck reception. This is the ninth appearance of SOS Art, thoughtfully and tirelessly organized by Saad Ghosn. The opening and all other SOS Art 2011 programs are free and open to the public.
