Joey Votto

You have to go back all the way to 1999 to find a Cincinnati Reds player making a legitimate run at the Rookie of the Year title. That was until first baseman Joey Votto started his red-hot 2008 campaign.

With a nasty combination of home run power, opposite field liners and flat-out clutch RBI ability, this native Canadian’s blossoming talent has been the perfect distraction during another lackluster season for the Redlegs.

But he’s also exhibit 1A on why this team could be turning the corner a lot faster than some people think.

Q: What’s the coolest thing about you?
Votto: My family and friends.

Q: How do you keep your cool when someone is throwing 98 mph heaters near your head?
Votto: I try to ignore it, but I’m thankful it didn’t get me.

Q: Who’s the coolest person you know?
Votto: My mother, because of her strength, patience and calm under pressure.
