Event: Zoo Blooms

As of a couple days ago, weather.com says Monday will have a high around 50, which means no snow and a great day to kick-off the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s annual Zoo Blooms show.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s is one of only two accredited botanical gardens in Ohio, and their Zoo Blooms offers one of the largest flower displays in the Midwest. (The Zoo’s website warns that the tulips will be blooming late due to the weather, sometime further into April.)

Focused on tulips — there are more than 100,000 tulips in the Bloom’s “Tulip Mania” — visitors will also see more than one million daffodils, hyacinths, flowering trees, shrubs and other spring bulbs in full, exploding color. Check back weekly to see the progress of the bulbs; the tulips will start with yellow and red in the first bloom, followed by every color imaginable in the main bloom.

The Tunes & Blooms series also returns as part of Zoo Blooms. Every Thursday in April local musicians take over the garden for a live, free concert.

Despite the late-coming spring, the weekly series — which showcases two local musical acts at each event — is in honor of the blooming flowers of the Zoo's Botanical Gardens. The free concerts go down every Thursday in April and run 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

The rest of the series features Folk Pop duo Shiny & the Spoon and eclectic Roots ensemble Shiny Old Soul (April 18), and, on April 25, Tunes & Blooms goes Reggae with veteran Ohio Reggae legends The Ark Band and Cincinnati’s fantastic The Cliftones. (cincinnatizoo.org)

The zoo is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and later for special events. $10-$15. 3400 Vine St., Avondale, 513-281-4700, cincinnatizoo.org.
