Art: Daap Galleries' Artist Reception, Rise and Fall: Monumental Duct Tape Drawings

Contemporary artists who use non-traditional media to create their work often muddy the lines between categories of drawing, sculpture and painting. Philadelphia-based Joseph Girandola is one such artist who pushes those boundaries, and his large-scale drawings of iconic cultural symbols as the Taj Mahal, the leaning Tower of Pisa and Stonehenge will be on display at DAAP Galleries Philip M. Meyers, Jr. Memorial Gallery through the end of March. Girandola, former director of the MFA Program/Studio Art at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, builds up his canvas with layers of brightly colored duct tape, which he folds and bends in ribbons, like a painter might if applying thick impasto work with a palette or painting knife.
