Jonathan Larson might be considered sort of a one-hit wonder in the world of musical theater. The composer/lyricist who created Rent died at the age of 35, just days before his mega-hit show opened in 1996. But it was not, in fact, the only thing he created. A much more personal piece predated it by a half-dozen years: tick, tick … BOOM! is Larson’s very funny and insightful autobiographical show about turning 30. The show about having the courage to pursue your dreams is being presented this weekend in a cabaret-style production by Showbiz Players at Below Zero Lounge in Over-the-Rhine.

Zac Huffman plays Jon who’s waiting on tables and writing musicals while his girlfriend Susan (Jen McGuire) wants to get married and move out of New York City. Meanwhile, his best friend Michael (Ian Dahlman) is making big bucks on Madison Avenue. It’s a situation that explodes with musical entertainment. Showbiz Players, by the way, is a community theater that has decided to explore new ways of reaching audiences. Its production of A … My Name is Alice a year ago at Below Zero proved that it could work. And this show should do the same. 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. $12.
