The best multi-act/multi-venue/multi-genre festival for original Greater Cincinnati musical acts returns this weekend for three days’ worth of sights and sounds (primarily) in the Northside neighborhood. Launched in 2006, the community-oriented AYE Music & Art Festival has not only showcased local aural and visual artists, but also raised thousands of dollars for various local charities. This year’s event will raise money and awareness for Women Helping Women, which offers support and services to those affected by abuse.

On Friday and Saturday, AYE (aka “Adjust Your Eyes”) presents events at Northside Yacht Club (4227 Spring Grove Ave., northsideyachtclub.com), Chameleon (4114 Hamilton Ave., chameleon-northside.com), Urban Artifact (1660 Blue Rock St., artifactbeer.com), Junker’s Tavern (4156 Langland St., 513-541-5470) and The Mockbee (2260 Central Parkway, facebook.com/themockbee), which is in the Brighton arts district. AYE continues Sunday at Chameleon, Northside Yacht Club and Urban Artifact.

While the event does feature several regional and national acts, it primarily focuses on local talent. Exploring the venues is recommended (most have no cover charge), but some highlights include the #Natihiphop Showcases Friday at Chameleon and Junker’s, featuring artists like Raised x WolvesPizza BoizWeirdDoseSons of Silverton and Lazy Ass Destroyer; the Cinthesizer Showcase at Chameleon Saturday and Sunday, featuring Electronic and Hip Hop sounds from HermosaDanbientDevin BurgessMeiosisSupa and others; and the Phase Melt Digital Showcases at The Mockbee Friday and Saturday, coupling Electronic-oriented music from artists like Liquid HologramPlayfully Yours and Infinity Spree with Phase Melt’s visual accompaniment.

Local Tiny Desketeers

This Saturday, longtime Cincinnati public radio station WVXU (91.7 FM; wvxu.org) presents its second-annual Tiny Desk Showcase, featuring an interesting cross-section of local bands and solo artists that submitted videos for NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, a nationwide competition that plays off of the popular Tiny Desk Concerts series.

The concept of the original series (presented as video and audio) is surprisingly simple, yet remarkably ingenious — present artists in the raw, without effects or production, performing at NPR’s offices. The Tiny Desk Contest began three years ago as a way to discover lesser-known talent from across the country. Video submissions are uploaded to YouTube that show the artist performing an original song in a “desk” setting.

Cincinnati hasn’t produced a Tiny Desk Contest winner (yet), but it has certainly been well represented in submissions. According to WVXU, 91 entries have come from the area since the contest began. The station enlisted several of the area acts that submitted to the 2017 contest (check some videos out here) to perform at Saturday’s Tiny Desk Showcase event at Southgate House Revival (111 E. Sixth St., Newport, Ky., southgatehouse.com). Artists slated to appear include Anew To WanderElk CreekGreg MahanJack Burton OverdriveJen Creasey, JetLab, Knotts, Mega Pixel, Nick Kizirnis, The Matildas, Emily Parker, Maurice Mattei, Brianna Kelly, Adam StoneLauren Eylise and Tooth Lures A Fang
