Portraitist Kehinde Wiley’s paintings of contemporary persons of color in classical poses reflect his desire to deliberately place this group within the context of traditional Western painting. Wiley, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles during the late ’80s and studied painting at Yale, has shown his work all over the world and will debut his latest series, Memling, at the Taft Museum of Art later this summer. The film, An Economy of Grace (which recently won Best Short Documentary at South By Southwest), documents his creative process and touches on the political inspirations (issues of power, gender and sexuality) behind his work.
