If the names Wilbur, Charlotte and Fern conjure up pleasant childhood memories of an innocent pig, a literate spider and a kindhearted little girl, then you no doubt spent some time reading E. B. White’s 1952 classic Charlotte’s Web, a story of a cross-species collaboration that celebrates loyalty and friendship. (My own favorite character was the ill-tempered rat Templeton, who rummaged through the dump to locate the texts for Charlotte’s “miraculous” web-woven advertisements that protected Wilbur from slaughter.)
Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is concluding its 85th season with performances of a musical version of Wilbur’s adventure, a production that has proven to be one of the venerable theater’s most popular productions. In the approach that CTC applies to its successful productions, the story is told using music by Katie Laur (a legendary singer, songwriter and musician and occasional CityBeat contributor) and imaginative puppets created by Joe Kovacs and Andy Gaukel.
There are school performances all week, but anyone can show up at the Taft Theatre and buy tickets for shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Grab a kid and make the trip: You know you want to return to that friendly, funny barnyard. $17-$20.
