New Edgecliff Theatre (NET) annually finds a way to creep an audience out for one evening — while paying tribute to the art of radio theater. Lots of small towns have secrets, but Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow just might be the capital of gloom and gore. When the bumbling, superstitious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane comes town, he’s attracted to a lovely young woman. But his schoolmaster’s nerves are sent haywire by tales of a dark phantom who rides through the woods at night. Will he overcome his fears and win the beautiful Katrina, or will he succumb to the legendary evils of the Headless Horseman?
NET annually calls on WMKV’s Mike Martini for authentic sound effects to be part of telling this story, which is directed by Bob Allen. The result is a thrill-a-minute Halloween weekend event that also happens to be a fundraiser for the theater: There’s a dessert buffet that’s part of the package with treats (no tricks) from some of Cincinnati’s finest restaurants.
The performance is 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Performance Center, 3900 Eastern Ave., Columbia-Tusculum. $35 ($20 for those 13 and under). 888-588-0137.
