Perhaps due to the need to capture and represent such an ephemeral act, the cosmic Venn diagram of skateboarders and artists has always featured a large crossover population. So when Gary Collins, owner of Instrument Skateboards and clothing line and the Galaxie Skateshop in Newport, began working with other area business owners and the city of Newport to build a new skatepark, he knew his best resource would be local skateboarders/artists like Joel Blazer, Doug Korfhagen, Ali Calis, Mike Deye, Kevin Muente, etc., etc.
To that end, Collins organized a fundraiser for the future skatepark that features local bands already friendly with the skateboarding crowd (musicians like the Cincinnati Suds and Trademark Aaron) and an auction of 30 one-of-a-kind artist-painted skate decks — 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to the skatepark fund.
