Chicago-based group Marbin returns to the Blue Wisp Jazz Club Saturday for a night of exploratory instrumental Jazz/Fusion. Marbin formed in 2007 as a duo featuring Israeli-American guitarist Dani Rabin and Israeli saxophonist Danny Markovitch. The twosome — which performs about 250 dates a year with their own ensembles and others — recorded the much acclaimed album Impressions of a City with longtime Pat Matheny Group drummer Paul Wertico in 2008 (the album is credited to Paul Wertico’s Mid-East/Mid-West Alliance), which was followed by the duo’s 2009 self-titled debut as Marbin. Wertico joined Marbin for its second album, last year’s Breaking the Cycle, an innovative and unpredictable recording that shows the group’s eagerness to color outside of the lines musically, incorporating a heavy Rock/Post Rock influence, intriguing loops and even vocals into their unique, often song-based Fusion. Breaking the Cycle also features another Matheny Group alum, bassist Steve Rodby, and guests Jamey Haddad (percussionist with Paul Simon) and Mat Davidson from celebrated Indie Folk band The Low Anthem.
