Welcome to the 2005 MidPoint Music Festival, Cincinnati's annual time to bask in the national (and international) music spotlight.
The fest features bands and performers from all over the world and speakers and panelists from every facet of the music industry. The music will be in the clubs (mostly centered around the Main Street Entertainment District in Over-the-Rhine and Downtown), and this year the workshop and registration area is being housed in the Contemporary Arts Center for the first time, giving those visiting Cincinnati a breathtaking introduction to what the city has to offer.
MidPoint is all about the unsigned artist, providing club-hoppers a chance to see up-and-coming acts before they're ruined by the music industry. Actually, that's where the panels come in.
The various daytime roundtables and educational sessions will help artists navigate the sometimes seedy world of the music biz. And this year's keynote addresses should prove to be some of the best yet, with area natives Greg Dulli and Alan Light giving talks on Friday. See our roundup of the panels here.
This week's CityBeat features our annual blurbfest that previews all 300 or so MidPoint bands, including (in)camera (see the cover story on them here).. Ezra Waller, Brian Baker, Jason Gargano, Jacob Richardson and I sought out information and music from each performer and then churned out snappy summaries of what one can expect should you decide to go check them out.
We've continued our "You'll Dig It If You Dig..." qualifiers this year with each act's write-up in order to give you a sense of whether or not a specific performer fits your tastes. Please pick up a copy of CityBeat at our 1,500 distribution spots around town to get the lowdown.
But MidPoint is mainly about exploring, so don't rely solely on our recommendations. Stop in here and there to check out bands you've never heard of and show everyone what we've been saying for years now — Cincinnati is a great music town for local and touring bands, and music lovers have it pretty good here as well. Especially with the MidPoint Music Festival providing such a scrumptious, massive feast of new sounds every year.
