Billy is the deaf son of a really noisy family. He’s found ways to cope with their boisterous, contentious lives, but they haven’t done the same for him. When he makes friends with a young woman who has a different take on dealing with deafness — she signs, he lip-reads — a tug-of-war ensues.

Nina Raine’s Tribes won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for outstanding play in New York City. Directed by longtime Cincinnati Playhouse associate artistic director Michael Evan Haney, this promises to be a sharp, funny production about family dynamics. Ensemble Theatre will also be offering 14 ASL-interpreted performances.

Showtimes Tuesday-Sunday. Through Feb. 16. $16-$43. Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, 1127 Vine St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-421-3555, ensemblecincinnati.org.
