Georg Friedrich Haas’s In iij. Noct. goes where no string quartet has gone before. The performers will be seated in the theater’s four corners, the house lights will be doused and Makr will take on this intriguing work described by The New Yorker as “a modern masterpiece that transforms the concert hall into a place of shuddering mystery.” The Austrian composer’s verbal score lets the performers determine just how it plays out, including the duration of the piece. But it’s hardly random: Haas lays out 18 musical “situations” with detailed instructions for riffing on motifs, string textures and chords, along with “invitations” to signal when it’s time to move on to the next section.
