Is helping to paint the new Fiona mural in downtown Cincinnati worth $250 to you?

In announcing today that it and the Cincinnati Zoo are teaming up to sponsor a mural honoring the already legendary 1-year-old hippo, ArtWorks says it is introducing a new public art concept — and to raise money for the nonprofit arts organization.

Called Cincinnati Paint by Numbers, it will allow anyone to buy a $250 ticket to paint alongside the professional artist and youth apprentices who usually paint ArtWorks murals.

The Fiona mural will be located on the wall of Rover the Rhine Veterinary Hospital at 910 Race St. That building already has a mural on a southern wall facing a parking lot, a lovely if slightly peeling pastoral scene featuring trees, lakes and a seemingly content Loch Ness Monster. Not one of the city's better known murals, it nonetheless has a cult reputation — especially among those who can see it from the windows of the nearby CityBeat office.

The call to artists for the Fiona mural is open today through April 29; public voting will follow. More information at artworkscincinnati.org.
