Jockey Club Re-Reunion

Aug. 15 • Southgate House

The folks at local independent publisher Aurore Press have done more than almost anyone to keep alive the legend of The Jockey Club, the ’80s Punk Rock venue in Newport that put the allegedly behind-the-times Cincinnati on the Punk map and helped foster a strong local Punk scene that lives on to this day.

First, Aurore released Stories for Shorty (which is at the end of its print run and won’t be reissued, so grab one quick at aurorepress.com), a collection of recollections from the club’s regulars. That prompted a “reunion” show at the Southgate House, featuring JC regulars like SS-20, The Libertines US (pictured), BPA, The Thangs and The Reduced. Those sets were recorded and excerpts are now available on the CD, A Jockey Club Reunion: Live at the Southgate House.

The release party for Aurore’s first foray into music-releasing will feature a “re-reunion” of Jockey bands, this time including SS-20, Human Zoo, The Libertines US and Gang Green, the legendary Boston Punk band that's now based in Cincinnati and features some Cincy musicians in its ranks. The show is a benefit for “Handsome” Clem Carpenter, the Jockey Club's defacto “Master of Ceremonies” and a pioneering Punk radio broadcaster on WAIF.

The fun kicks off at 8:30 p.m. $5 for 21 and up; $8 for those 19 and 20. Get show/club details here.
