Seems like the modern dance scene has always been a strong (if sometimes underground) and steady force in Cincinnati. A new facet in its ongoing evolution has recently opened up for creative types to express themselves. And thanks to the co-sponsorship of MamLuft & Co. Dance and longtime modern dance presenter Contemporary Dance Theater, it is all free!

In this case, freedom’s just another word for the Third Fridays Movement and Music Jam, debuting Friday at 6:30-8 p.m. (and continuing every third Friday though April).

MamLuft Artistic Director and CDT Assistant Director Jeanne Mam-Luft is enthusiastic about helping to provide this once-monthly venue for creative exploration at the charming College Hill Town Hall, a multi-use, expansive-former-town-hall space, already a popular location for classes and events. She invites dancers (especially modern) and musicians to bring an instrument or CD, perhaps potluck to share, friends and energy.

“Improvisation has a special place at the heart of modern dance,” says Mam-Luft. “I can say that there is nothing to match the real-time adventure of a live and developing idea with contributions from separate entities — I think that the accidentally novel moments that occur can often teach us more than anything we could otherwise choreograph or compose.”

Contemporary Dance Theater is at The College Hill Town Hall (1805 Larch Ave., College Hill). Go here for event and venue details.
