In order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that all humans have “inherent dignity” and that the “equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,” the ACLU of Ohio and the First Unitarian Church Social Justice are hosting an evening of readings from Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak. Edited by Mark Falkoff, the attorney for 17 of the prisoners, this collection gives voice to those held at Camp Delta and describes the human rights abuses at Guantanamo. Some of these poems were originally written in toothpaste or scratched into foam cups with pebbles. The First Unitarian Church is located at 536 Linton St. in Clifton. The evening’s events start at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Get details and RSVP here.
