I was told that the cast of the Dungeons of Delhi is mainly children. I assumed that meant that it would be mild and even kid-friendly to the younger ones. I was wrong. Run by the Delhi Township Police Explorers as a fundraiser with an all-volunteer crew, it’s one freaky tour. The house is located in the bottom of a defunct grocery store and uses the space well. The entrance makes you feel like you’re about to enter a place you shouldn’t be. As you travel from room to room, the bloody and deranged children add a new level of scary. They seem to find great joy in making the visitors jump with fear.
Some rooms are filled with screaming and the unexpected monster jumping out of a casket. Other rooms — those where my friend and I argued over who would go first — were completely dark and filled with whispering ghosts and unidentified things hanging from the ceiling. I certainly learned never to underestimate the abilities of children.
Open 7-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 7-9 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 31. If you want to bring younger kids, they offer a Sunday walk from 3-7 p.m. where the lights are turned on and the scary is turned down. Once inside the tour takes 10-15 minutes. I visited early on a Friday night, so there was no line, though the boss assured me that even at the busiest the wait isn’t too long.
