Props to the skateboarders. They not only have mastered the fine art of cheap transportation but also look far cooler getting from point A to point B than those of us driving around in our cruddy Korean junkers. So ditch the car, grab a board (or just come watch) and head to the Newport riverfront for Rollin’ on the River, an all-day fundraising event on Sunday from noon-6 p.m. The Galaxie Skateshop, in cooperation with Able Projects and the City of Newport, presents a free, open “skateable art” park featuring ramps, obstacles and mural work and appearances by local pro skate teams Effort, Instrument and Fickle. Then at 8 p.m. the party moves to the Southgate House for a show with The Lions Rampant, The Read, The Highlight Reel and DJ Chin, a silent auction and bring-your-own-T-shirt screen-printing. Admission to the show is $5 ($8 for 18-20). All proceeds from Rollin’ will go to benefit the construction of a skate park in Newport. Get details here.
