We haven’t heard much this year from Jersey Productions, a company that has offered summertime musicals for four seasons to entertain local audiences, first at the Carnegie in Covington and more recently at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Truth to tell, the small company has been working hard to raise funds to keep things going, and that’s meant a hiatus from performing so far this summer. That’s changing this week, at least for one night, when Jersey presents Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed musical theater piece, Songs for a New World, which is not quite a traditional musical or a song cycle. The pieces are all connected, and Brown — the composer and lyricist who also created the musicals The Last Five Years, Parade and 13 — has said, “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice or take a stand or turn around and go back.” The performance is a benefit for the company as well as the Guest Equity Fund of the Acclaim Awards, which enables our smaller theaters to hire local professional actors. The cast of Songs for a New World includes Kaitlin Becker, Pamela Day, Matt Dentino, Ken Early, Beth Harris, Montez Jenkins, Annie Kalahurka, Blythe Walker and Elizabeth Worley. Liz Vosmeier is the director and choreographer, and Kelly Martin is musical director. This is an evening worth seeing — and for a worthy cause. $15. 8 p.m. at the Aronoff Center, 513-621-2787.
