After becoming Indie Rock darlings with 2013’s debut Major Arcana, singer/songwriter/guitarist Sadie Dupuis of Massachusetts foursome Speedy Ortiz recognized something most who’d heard her multifaceted guitar Rock could have told her when the album was released — she and her band can actually pull off this “professional musician” thing. Dupuis quit her teaching job and began writing the songs that would make up Foil Deer. Though Speedy Ortiz still sounds at times like a gene-splice made up of equal parts Pavement, Helium and Liz Phair, Foil Deer finds the band sounding better on every level, with snaking dynamics, imaginative guitar work and gusts of artsy noise. Teaching is a nice fall-back, but music lovers should be ecstatic over Dupuis’ career maneuver — Foil Deer is one of 2015’s best albums.
