Once upon a time in a loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Emily Haines and James Shaw made New Wave music together. They performed around New York City calling themselves Metric and trying to scrape up enough money to pay rent and buy food.
One day, a very important producer/fairy godfather, Stephen Hague, summoned the duo to London. He had produced albums for New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees and, oh yeah, Ace of Base. He clearly knew his shit and he wanted to bestow his talents upon the kids from Metric. With his help, they began recording songs that would later appear on Metric’s debut album, Grow Up and Blow Away.
Like any good Electro-Synth Rock band, their music interested major companies who wanted to feature Metric’s music in commercials and shows. Four albums and one re-release later, the band even had songs played on Grey’s Anatomy! (Roughly the equivalent of getting kissed by The Prince.) Metric’s happily-ever-after came in the form of a spot on the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack; the song, “Eclipse (All Yours)” will forever solidify their place in the hearts of millions of fans.
Metric’s newest album, Synthetica, has done well across the globe and the accompanying tour is sure to be a hit. And, these days, the kids of Metric are doing just fine relying on their own magic.
