Uhhh, guys? I don’t know how to tell you this, but Nickel Creek is back. The Bluegrass-y trio first arrived in 1993 and quickly became a well-loved band with songs like, “Reasons Why” and “The Hand Song.” Band members Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins were young, though. So young — Sara and Thile were 12 and Sean was 16 in ’93. In 2007, they embarked on their “Farewell (For Now)” tour. They’d been performing together since 1989 and it was time for a little space.
They have spent the last few years making names for themselves outside the trio. Sara Watkins and her guitar-playing brother, Sean, have made appearances in Cincinnati twice recently, each time playing to a packed house of adoring fans. Chris Thile, a mandolin virtuoso, has played and recorded with Yo-Yo Ma and released multiple albums with his band, Punch Brothers. He even made an appearance on the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack.
Everything the trio did while separated was brilliant. However, there’s no replacing the beautiful music they make when they’re together. Thankfully, they’ve teamed up once again for the release of A Dotted Line.
Their first tour in years takes them across the country for appearances at Telluride, Austin City Limits and, yes, the Taft Theatre. I can’t think of a more perfect venue to welcome the reincarnated, and as talented as ever, Nickel Creek.
NICKEL CREEK performs Tuesday, May 6 at Taft Theatre. Tickets/more info here .
