Taken from Richard Hague's collection Alive in Hard Country, this sequence of poems circles around the many sides of addiction, echoed by deep strains of Bluegrass and Gospel. Rather than center on the customary reactions of shame or blame, this award-winning poet presents the many shards of a life lived wrong with a kind of understanding that bridges experience and empathy.

In Hague’s own words: “We make up beautiful, strange, and elaborate myths … in an attempt to explain ourselves to ourselves and to protect ourselves from ourselves.”

With musical accompaniment by Michael Henson.

Performed at Coffee Emporium May 28, 29 and 31 and June 2 and 5 (see map of Fringe venues here)
