The next adaptation in the long line of young adult fantasy books with dystopian societies and pretty protagonists, The Giver curiously rates slightly higher on the scale thanks to the presence of Phillip Noyce (the Australian helmer of Clear and Present Danger, Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Quiet American knows how to handle action thoughtfully without sacrificing the thrills) behind the camera and Oscar winners Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep out front. The story revolves around a utopian oasis where a young boy (Brenton Thwaites) must learn harsh life lessons from an elder (Bridges) in order to carry the burden and protect the new world order. Opens wide Aug. 15. (PG-13) Not screened in time for review
