Inaugurated in Cincinnati in August, 1989, the 21st annual Midwest Regional Black Family Reunion Celebration (BFRC) will be held this weekend at Sawyer Point. First envisioned in 1986 by Dr. Dorothy I. Height, President Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women, the BFRC is a three-day event that brings people together to concentrate on the strengths and values of the black family. More than 100,000 people meet each year to enjoy the weekend’s activities, which include a parade, music, ventriloquist performances, golf scrambles, boat rides and more. Friday’s free events start with a morning breakfast/opening ceremony and continue with an afternoon job fair and an evening town hall meeting. Saturday will feature a day-long R&B concert. Following Sunday morning’s service is a day’s worth of live Gospel music. Saturday, the BFRC puts on a 1.7 mile-long parade starting in Avondale beginning at 10 a.m. Featuring 26-year Cincinnati Police veteran Lieutenant Colonel Michael Cureton as the parade’s Grand Marshall, this year’s theme will be “Families Helping Families.”
