With the physical elegance of Nancy Wilson, the vocal ballsiness of Dinah Washington and the sheer musicality of Ella Fitzgerald, Virginia-based singer Rene Marie quietly crept up on us last year with her MaxJazz debut release How Can I Keep From Singing? It remains a rhetorical musical question as well as a personal quest throughout 12 covers and original compositions which Marie absolutely wraps her chords around like a long farewell embrace. She floored 'em last summer at Swifton Commons with trumpeter Mike Wade's quartet backing her up. Friday she returns to the area with a gig in Dayton with the same swinging, stellar musical accompaniment. If you've been dismayed and disappointed with the lack of verve in Jazz of late, check out Rene Marie and get reinvigorated.

At Gilly's on Friday.
