This indie family drama from co-writers Amy Belk and Matthew Porterfield, who also directed, possesses onion-like layers that, while peeling away, seems to call forth even more tears. Runaway Taryn (Deragh Campbell), far from her home in Northern Ireland, seeks refuge with an uncle (Ned Oldham) and aunt (Kim Taylor) in Baltimore but the couple faces challenges themselves, struggling to end their marriage as amicably as possible for the sake of their daughter (Hannah Gross), a college freshman. I Used to Be Darker presents a collection of individuals, bound by blood, but lost and grasping for love and connection wherever they can find it. Opens Oct. 25 at Esquire Theatre.
